History Ostend Masters
60 YEARS TTC DRIVE OOSTENDE 1958-2018
40th FLANDERS INTERNATIONAL TABLE TENNIS TOURNAMENT
20th FLANDERS YOUTH & 16th FLANDERS SENIOR CUP
20th Ostend Masters
TTC Ostend club history started officially in 1958. Before this period the club was only known as an amateur association where friends came together for practice without any competition whatsoever.
More than 40 years ago in 1978 the City of Ostend asked the Club to start a ‘small’ tournament for all citizens & local tourists under the name “Ostend Moves”. That year we had 284 entries and the tournament was played on 8 tables.
Three years later, in 1981, we started an A-Class series. This event took place at the venue hall Media Center. The Open table tennis tournament became a real tourist attraction with a big international interest.
In 1991 we began a 3-day weekend tournament at a new venue : ‘the local Sports Center’ (also the current venue) with 46 tables. The event kept on growing, exceeding more than 1500 entries only a few years later. The tournament had a new climax in 1996 with its first Flanders Ostend Masters, an invitation tournament with 8 players consisting of 6 invited players (ranked within the Top 100 of the world) and the 2 finalists of the A-series.
Jean-Michel Saive the greatest Belgian player ever, who was the world’s number 1 for 515 days, entered the tournament in 1980 when he won the Cadets-series. He also won the A-Series 2 times & was twice the winner of the Flanders Ostend Masters.
Sadly the tournament had a huge setback at the end of May 1998 when a 30 meter high tower crane fell down on the Sports Centre. The tournament had to be cancelled although the organization tried very hard to find another venue.
TTC Drive Ostend eventually did overcome the setback adding 2 more days of table tennis along the way. With a total of 64 series in 2010 the tournament became the biggest in Europe, guaranteeing everyone to compete from being non-ranked to the worlds number 1, and from the Benjamin-series to the over-85-series.
We are very proud to have registered 44 different nationalities over the years and that not only the quality players (world number 1, European champions, several national champions,…) but also a high quantity of players have chosen to participate in our tournament. This either in the singles, doubles or Team-events.
Al of this would have been unrealizable without the presence of our 60 volunteers during those 5 days and without the support of the City of Ostend, Tourism, the Flemish Government Sports Flanders, the region of West-Flanders, KW, Tibhar, Radio Oostende1 and many other sponsors.
The Belgian players as well as Cedric Nuytinck Belgium N° 1 will be present to meet all other top-level players.
More than 1500 entries, 44 different Nationalities:
64 Series: From - 6 Years old to 85+years old & From non-ranked to the TOP of the WORLD RANKING.
